Gerardo Suter was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1957 and has lived in Mexico since 1970. Largely self-taught as a photographer., his career in the medium began in 1978, when he took photographs of theater and dance programs for the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, and then for journals and catalogs of various scientific and cultural institutions. In the early 1980s, Suter emerged as one of Mexico’s leading young photographers, exhibiting the manipulated prints for which he first gained notice. Simultaneously, he began to teach courses and give lectures on photography and its techniques. During the past fifteen years he has become recognized as a leader in photography and multi-media installation art. He represented Mexico at the São Paulo Biennial in 1996 and at the 7th Havana Biennial in 2000 in Cuba. Suter’s photography has been published in many catalogs including Códices (Galleria Arte Contemporaneo, 1991) and Anáhuac (El Centro, 1995). His first photography book is Labyrinth of Memory (Americas Society, 1999). Suter is using more digital photography techniques these days and lives in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The Wittliff owns five memorable images from Suter’s Códices series in addition to the portrait of author Carlos Fuentes.
