The Southwestern Writers Collection was formed in 1986 to collect and preserve the finest artistic representations of the American Southwest. The Collection has quickly grown into a repository of national importance, and chief among its holdings is the Hispanic Writers Collection. Supported by grants from Anheuser-Busch and
contributions from individual donors, the Hispanic Writers Collection
provides an opportunity for students, The Collection includes the works of major
Chicano authors such as Tomás Rivera, who graduated from
Texas State University-San Marcos and went on to become the youngest person
ever appointed chancellor of a University of California system
campus. Rivera's first novel, ...y no se lo tragó la tierra,
is widely considered a modern The Hispanic Writers Collection also contains
the complete works of dozens of other important Chicano authors,
as well as numerous books on Mexican American history and culture.
Also in 1999, the Southwestern Writers Collection added some 60 historical periodicals on microfilm to its collection from the Chicano Studies Library at the University of California-Berkeley. The newspapers range from the mid 19th century to the present, and are available for research in the collection. |
