 Hispanic Magazine Archives

In May 1999 Hispanic Magazine has donated its archives to the Southwestern Writers Collection in the interest of preservation and research.

Hispanic Magazine Finding Aid

Hispanic, currently in its 12th year of publication, reaches a monthly readership of over 1 million, placing it among the nation's leading magazines. Hispanic focuses on business, politics, and culture, running stories on all aspects of Latino life in the United States.

The addition of the Hispanic archives represents a significant step forward for the Southwestern Writers Collection," says Curator Connie Todd. "We are well on our way to becoming major resource for Mexican American studies."

The material consists of the editorial files from 1994-1998, including manuscripts, correspondence, memos, research, press kits, and notes. The archives allow unparalleled access to the wide range of topics that Hispanic covers.

"If, for example, someone wanted to research Tejano superstar and TxState alum Emilio Navaira, the Hispanic archives are a tremendous resource," says Ms. Todd." There's research on Emilio, other stories done on him, his press kit, and drafts of the article. And that same sort of material illuminates a wide range of topics Hispanic has covered, from Mexico's political situation to curanderismo (folk healing) in South Texas."

The Hispanic archives join a number of other distinguished Mexican-American holdings in the Southwestern Writers Collection, including significant works of Chicano literature, film, music, and art.
