Because the filming process is so expensive, significant advance planning is necessary to avoid delays, unnecessary takes, or risks to the cast and crew. Storyboards are visual outlines for the film often used by directors to plan camera shots, angles, and action sequences for all or part of the film.
Director Simon Wincer and Cinematographer Doug Milsome used storyboards only sparingly in Lonesome Dove. The following example, drawn by storyboard artist Michael Peal, plots the scene in which the stolen horses from Mexico run through the town and Jake Spoon goes to visit Lorena.
