Though the action in Lonesome Dove takes place over a wide area ranging from the Texas-Mexico border and the mountains of Montana, the film was shot on locations in Texas and northern New Mexico. Because Australian Director Simon Wincer was not familiar with the geography of the American West, Production Designer Cary White created this map to detail the action in Lonesome Dove. The map allowed the director to match the terrain in the shooting locations to the places depicted on the map.
