Filmmaker Robert Benton Subject of Exhibit at TxState

Robert Benton @ TxState Friday, October 12, 2001

Academy Award winning director/writer/producer Robert Benton, known for such films as Kramer vs. Kramer, Places in the Heart, Nobody's Fool, Bonnie and Clyde, and Billy Bathgate, is the subject of a special exhibition at the Southwestern Writers Collection at TxState.

Places in the Heart: The Cinematic Landscapes of Robert Benton, displays original manuscripts, treatments, outlines and screenplays along with movie-set photographs, original storyboards, and posters.

The exhibit highlights the Robert Benton archives, which the filmmaker donated to the Southwestern Writers Collection earlier this year. The Benton display is part of a unique exhibit doubleheader at the Southwestern Writers Collection. Also currently featured is Paths to Justice: African-American Culture in Texas. Together, both exhibits showcase the extensive and remarkable holdings found within TxState's Southwestern Writers Collection.

The exhibit was curated by Carla Ellard, Assistant Curator of the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography.

The exhibit will be available on display until December 21, 2002. The Southwestern Writers Collection is a major archival repository focusing on the literature, film, and music of the Southwest. The Collection is housed on the top floor of the Albert B. Alkek Library at Texas State University-San Marcos. Hours are 8-5 Monday through Friday (til 9pm Tuesdays), 9-5 Saturday, 2-6 Sunday.
